Croeso i'r Meithrin | Welcome to Nursery

Athrawon Meithrin | Nursery Teachers

The Nursery Unit is a valued part of Plascrug School with their life and work guided by the aims and objectives of the whole school. However, the needs of our youngest children are quite specific and our approach to their education is inspired by an environment which promotes self-discipline and self-esteem, enabling children to become motivated and independent learners.

We recognise that you, as parents and carers, are the child’s first educators and will continue to play an important role throughout their school life. Each child is unique, with their own individual way of learning. At Plascrug Nursery the emphasis is on the fun of finding out through structured and spontaneous play in an environment full of possibilities. We also recognize that at this age play and work are synonymous. To develop this, additional regular and familiar routines are planned to provide structure to each session.

Our Nursery Unit has an excellent staff /children ratio. Staff are always available to answer any queries or concerns you may have, so please feel able to approach them.

The earliest admission date for any child here at Plascrug is the first term following their third birthday. However, this is only on a part-time basis of 0.5 per week into the Part Time Nursery Class. The maximum capacity for this class is 26. Children are then offered a full-time place the term after their fourth birthday, spaces permitting. Parents will then have to re-apply before formal entry into the Reception Class.
(Click here to visit our Admissions page for further details).

Our Aims

  • To develop a mutually respectful partnership with parents focussed on the best interest of the child.
  • To celebrate children’s achievements and plan educational progress.
  • To provide experiences which are relevant to the child’s stage of development.
  • To provide a rich learning environment that will nurture and develop the child as a whole.
  • To ensure every child has access to a comprehensive range of education, training and learning opportunities, including acquisition of skills.
  • To have access to play, leisure, sporting and cultural activities.
  • To provide a wide range of experiences that will enhance learning opportunities and that are relevant to every child.
  • To ensure that pupils are in a safe environment that supports physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • To provide a learning environment, both indoors and out, that will promote first-hand experiences of solving real-life problems and the opportunity to learn about conservation and sustainability.

The curriculum for the Nursery Unit within the Foundation Phase has seven key Areas of Learning:

  • Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity
  • Language, Literacy and Communication Skills
  • Mathematical Development
  • Welsh Language Development
  • Knowledge & Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Experiences and activities are planned to promote children’s development and acquisition of skills in these areas using a thematic approach.

Things you need to know about our Nursery

The School Day

Morning Session
The morning session begins at 9 a.m. Children may be brought to the Nursery from 8:50. a.m. onwards when staff will usually be available to have a chat about anything that concerns you.

At 11.30 a.m. the children should be collected promptly from the main Foundation Phase entrance and staff will open the main door at the appropriate time.

Afternoon Session
Children who attend the afternoon session may be brought to the Nursery from 12.50 p.m. onwards.

This session ends at 3.20 p.m. and children should be collected promptly from the Nursery yard entrance at the rear of the school.

In the interest of your children’s safety this is a highly supervised and controlled activity and we would appreciate your co-operation at all times. No child will be allowed to leave school with an unknown adult.

If, at any time, your child is to be collected by another adult it is vital that we are informed.

Milk & Snack Times

Foundation Phase pupils are entitled to a third of a pint of free milk each day. As part of our Healthy Schools Plan we encourage children to only bring fruit to eat at breaktimes. To avoid unnecessary waste we suggest you send a small amount, in cling-film or a small container, as this is what most young children will be able to manage.

Clothes

The clothes children wear to school should be easy to manage as your child will be one of many needing help at the same time. Footwear, in particular, must be suitable for young children in a school setting. If you would like them to wear ‘School Uniform’, leaflets are available at the Reception Desk. This is encouraged by the School Governing Body.

For Physical Education your child will need...

  • Shorts
  • T-shirt
  • Pumps

A bag to keep these on the child’s peg would be very useful. Please label or mark every article of your child’s school clothing.

Illness

Children who are ‘under the weather’ do not enjoy being at school. If during their time at school your child becomes ill or has an accident, we will contact you. Following an accident he/she will be given an Accident Report Slip to bring home which will include all relevant information.

It is vital that we always have an up to date contact number for you.
(Home, your place of work, a relative or neighbour are all useful numbers.)

Checking Your Child’s Hair

This should be done regularly with a narrow tooth-comb as a sensible precaution against head lice. They are no respecter of persons!

Special Educational Needs:

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), often spends time in the Nursery observing children who may have additional needs.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Special Educational Needs, feel free to contact us.
